The State of California's new 200,000 square foot Department of Health Services office building complements the materials and massing of the existing laboratory complex while establishing a strong visual statement. Primary materials are concrete, metal and glass - long lasting materials that change little with age. The design conveys DHS' commitment to innovation, while continuing traditional civic typologies. Sustainable design strategies include passive solar measures, such as strong east-west orientation and optimized natural light.
